Specific gases for cutting metals using oxy-fuel technology.

The most suitable solution for oxy-fuel thermal cutting

Oxy fuel thermal cutting technology is the oldest and most well-known, but it is continuously evolving. This technology is essential for processing construction steels. Plasma and laser technologies are suitable for medium-thin thicknesses, but oxy fuel technology remains the most suitable for cutting thick sheets.

Nippon Gases has developed some specific products for this technology with the aim of making the process even more advantageous, in order to increase productivity and cutting quality.

What is the most important gas in the oxy-fuel cutting process?

Without a doubt, the correct answer is 'Oxygen'.

It supports the flame during the preheating stage, bringing the carbon steel to incandescence, thus fueling an exothermic reaction between the carbon contained in the steel and Oxygen. However, the fuel gas also has a fundamental role in the type of operation and the economy of the process. Depending on the type of cut to be performed, it is possible to choose the most suitable fuel gas.

For example, when a short and complex cut needs to be made, the fuel gas that performs best is acetylene, as it allows for a higher piercing speed and lower oxygen consumption.

On the other hand, when the cuts need to be long, it is better to use cheaper gases even if the piercing time is longer; this is offset over the duration of the entire cut.

Nippon Gases boasts special products in its range for oxy-fuel cutting technology.
