The role of gases in the additive manufacturing process
There are various types of 3D printing processes: PBF, EBM, DED, FDM and the more recent WAAM. A range of materials, often high-grade, can be used, which is why this is a costly process.
All these different processes share a common feature: protecting the workpiece from oxidation during the construction and heat treatment stages.
Therefore, to preserve the metallurgical properties of the metal powder—which are essential for obtaining the finished product—it is important to use high-quality gases.
Oxygen and humidity: the enemies of 3D printing
Oxygen is a contaminant and must therefore be removed from the process, as must moisture. The combined effect of these two contaminants leads to an exponential increase in defects in the finished product.
Nippon Gases’ research and development centres have carried out studies showing that these two contaminants are the cause of imperfections in the metallurgical structure of products manufactured using the 3D printing process. These studies have also revealed that the presence of both contaminants within the chamber is directly proportional to the number of product defects. Our company has developed equipment to drastically reduce the presence of oxygen and moisture and the resulting appearance of defects on the product. By eliminating these two factors, the process can be stabilised and standardised.
