Nippon Sanso acquires Carboneco to strengthen its position in the CO₂ market in Spain

Nippon Sanso Holdings Corporation (NSHD), through its European subsidiary  Nippon Sanso Spain, has acquired  Carboneco in a deal that strengthens its leadership in the industrial sector, focusing on sustainable, profitable growth and a commitment to safety and the environment

Carboneco, a company within the Neoelectra Group founded in 1999, specialises in the recovery, purification and marketing of high-purity, food-grade CO₂, and is one of the few companies in the sector to hold the international FSSC 22000 certification, guaranteeing the highest food safety standards.

This partnership will enable the two companies to combine their extensive experience and expertise to offer an efficient service in the development of industrial solutions, reducing emissions at the sites where they operate, whilst also providing a product of the highest quality.

Justin Corcho, NSHD’s chief representative in Spain and Portugal, emphasised: “The acquisition of Carboneco strengthens our position in the CO₂ market in Spain and reinforces our commitment to sustainable, efficient and customer-focused growth.”

Carboneco highlights that this transaction strengthens the industrial sector and generates new opportunities for growth and continuous improvement.

Guillem Borràs, Director of Carboneco, stated: This integration marks the start of an exciting new phase that will open up significant opportunities for technological and professional development, enabling us to achieve a higher quality standard and deliver greater value to our customers.”

About  Carboneco

Carboneco  is one of the leading producers of liquid and food-grade CO₂ in Spain. Founded in 1999, the company was established to recover and purify carbon dioxide from the flue gases of some of the Neoelectra Group’s cogeneration plants. This enabled the company to reduce its industrial carbon footprint by recovering up to 70,000 tonnes of emissions annually across its three production plants in Spain: El Grado (Huesca), Aliaga (Teruel) and Les (Valle de Arán).

Its commitment to gas recycling led the company to invest in doubling its total storage capacity, increasing it from the initial 700 tonnes spread across the three plants to 1,500 tonnes. It also provided a significant reserve stock to meet urgent supply needs for our customers in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

Due to Carboneco’s growth, in 2017 the parent group founded Neoelectra Logística. This subsidiary was initially created to manage the multimodal transport and ADR tanker fleet required to distribute CO₂ for industrial and food applications. Synergies were also leveraged to offer logistics and transport services both to the other companies within the Neoelectra Group and to third parties.

The CO₂ recovered by Carboneco is used in a wide range of industrial sectors, including the food and beverage industry, water treatment and refrigeration processes.
