Additive Manufacturing

Purity across the whole process chain, not just in the AM building chamber.

Additive manufacturing enables complex geometries, reduced component weight, shorter development cycles, and efficient production of specialised parts. These advantages are valuable for propulsion systems, structural components, thermal-management systems, protected vehicles, naval applications, and high-performance equipment.

With the 3DPro® portfolio, Nippon Sanso supports the additive manufacturing process chain with high-purity argon, nitrogen, and tailored gas solutions. Our offering extends from metal powder production, inerted powder storage and handling to printing, heat treatment, and hot isostatic pressing. Gas-quality monitoring and the control of oxygen and moisture in critical process stages help establish a stable production environment and reduce the risk of inconsistent mechanical properties, build instability, and premature component failure.

The 3DPro® portfolio is particularly suited to demanding materials used in Defence & Aerospace manufacturing.

Specialty and Rare Gases

The gases that are hardest to get, from a group that makes them.

Rare gases are thin markets – geographically concentrated and geopolitically exposed – and the last few years have shown European manufacturers exactly what that means. Nippon Sanso is one of the world’s leading suppliers of rare gases, with sourcing and purification capability at group level across four continents. When spot markets tighten, that is the difference between a programme that continues and one that waits.

We produce what we supply. Our rare gases are purified at our site in Hürth, Germany, and electronic specialty gases such as arsine come from our own group production. Vertical integration takes intermediaries out of the chain – and every intermediary removed is one less point of failure for your programme.

XENON

Xenon is the reference propellant for the Hall-effect and gridded ion thrusters on modern satellites and spacecraft. It keeps satellites in the right orbit, lets them change position and carries them deep into space.

KRYPTON

Where large constellations need electric propulsion at volume and at a lower cost per satellite, krypton is the proven alternative propellant.

NEON

Semiconductor-grade neon is the main component of the excimer laser gases used in chip lithography. For defence electronics, access to neon is access to the microelectronics supply chain.

HELIUM

Whether used for leak testing, inerting, purging, thermal management or precision manufacturing, helium plays a critical role across Defence & Aerospace.

ARSINE

Radar, satellite communications, night vision and military RF systems depend on compound semiconductors such as GaAs, InGaAs and InP. Arsine is a critical precursor, and Nippon Sanso supplies both the gas and the process equipment used to manufacture these advanced materials.

Testing, Qualification and System Validation

Validation and qualification are the absolute basis for every reliable, repeatable, high-quality process. Yet they are also among the most schedule-critical phases of any Defence & Aerospace programme.

Components and systems must withstand demanding operating conditions and extensive qualification campaigns. In these highly planned qualification campaigns, uninterrupted gas supply is not merely a utility requirement, it is a programme enabler. A missed test window due to gas availability can result in costly delays, disrupted schedules, and lost opportunities that cannot easily be recovered.

Nippon Sanso provides high-purity gases and engineered gas supply solutions that support every stage of the validation and qualification process, including:

  • Thermal-vacuum and environmental testing
  • Cryogenic testing and thermal cycling
  • Helium leak detection
  • Pressure and functional testing
  • Purging and inerting of test systems
  • Sensor, optics, radar, and electronics qualification
  • Materials and component research

By combining reliable gas supply with deep technical expertise, we help customers recreate precise operating conditions, protect sensitive assets, and validate the performance of critical systems and assemblies. The result is greater test integrity, reduced programme risk, and confidence that mission-critical equipment will perform when it matters most.

When qualification schedules are non-negotiable, Nippon Sanso delivers the gases, infrastructure, and expertise to keep your programmes moving forward.

Propulsion, Launch and Ground Support

From the test stand to the pad.

Defence & Aerospace programmes rely on gases across many stages of propulsion, including development and combustion, testing, pressurisation, purging, cooling and ground support. Nippon Sanso supports aircraft, rocket and engine test facilities; cryogenic operations and thermal management; tank and system pressurisation; line, vessel and equipment purging; leak testing and system conditioning; and ground-support and research infrastructure.

Propulsion is also where rare gases enter the story. Xenon and krypton are widely used as propellants for electric propulsion, linking ground-test and supply infrastructure directly with satellite manufacturing, constellation deployment and in-orbit operation. See Specialty and Rare Gases and Satellite and Advanced Space Technologies.

Defence Technologies and Mission-Critical Systems

Where the requirement is non-negotiable

Modern defence programmes combine advanced materials, precision manufacturing, electronics, optics, communications, propulsion, and thermal-management technologies. Industrial and specialty gases support the production and testing of components used in aircraft, protected land systems, naval platforms, surveillance equipment, radar and sensor systems, and secure communications infrastructure.

Medical Gases & Health Systems Resilience

Readiness does not end at the front line

Defence readiness is also medical readiness. National defence and civil-preparedness planning now counts civilian hospitals as part of the casualty chain: in a crisis, acute care hospitals, intensive care units and emergency medical services must absorb sudden peaks in demand – without running out of oxygen. That needs a partner that guarantees continuity of supply, clinical safety and rapid response, in routine operations and in emergencies alike.

With its integrated Hospital Care portfolio, Nippon Sanso supplies healthcare providers across Europe with medical gases, medical devices and therapeutic products. A pan-European network of air separation units (ASUs) produces liquid medical oxygen with high security of supply and wide geographical coverage – resilience built into infrastructure, not promised in a brochure.

Oxygen

300 Bar Medical Oxygen for Emergency and Rescue
Higher storage pressure puts more oxygen into lighter, more compact cylinders. For paramedics and first responders, that means more autonomy, easier transport and more efficient operations wherever the care has to move with the patient.

Carbon dioxide

Beyond Oxygen
Inhaled nitric oxide mixtures for intensive care and neonatal applications, and portable delivery systems that support treatment across different care settings.

Special gases

Capacity to Respond When Demand Surges
Nippon Sanso serves more than 800 hospitals in Germany alone and maintains significant production and distribution capacity to respond rapidly to demand peaks and extraordinary emergencies.

Security of Supply

The risk is not price. The risk is stopping.

Reliable gas availability is essential for Defence & Aerospace operations, where production interruptions can affect qualification schedules, delivery commitments, and mission readiness. Nippon Sanso works with customers to develop resilient supply concepts tailored to the criticality of each application, the required gas quality, local infrastructure, and anticipated demand.

By integrating gas sourcing, logistics, storage, distribution, and on-site technologies into one supply strategy, we help customers to reduce operational risk and create more resilient aerospace and defence supply chains that hold under pressure.
