Nitrogen is used in the storage and handling of a considerable number of chemicals, oil, foodstuffs and other products in inerting processes.

The use of nitrogen is appropriate where the presence of oxygen-containing atmospheres poses a risk or could cause the stored products to deteriorate. Inerting the tanks reduces the risks posed by flammable or volatile products, minimises emissions into the atmosphere and preserves the quality characteristics of the stored products.

The pressure in tanks varies more or less significantly with temperature, depending on the vapour pressure of the stored liquid. The same pressure fluctuations occur when filling and emptying tanks.

In both cases, the inerting system from Nippon Gases introduces nitrogen when there is negative pressure in the tank and releases gas when there is positive pressure in the tank, whereby the pressure is controlled and maintained under the protection of an inert atmosphere.
